Our lawyers frequently appear as counsel before courts, tribunals and commissions in Civil Litigation cases involving personal injury, insurance disputes, commercial litigation, wrongful dismissal and other compensation claims.

We defend clients facing quasi criminal and criminal charges, ranging from traffic violations to serious Criminal Code offences.

Our Corporate and Commercial lawyers provide advice to business owners, from sole proprietors to large corporations. We incorporate companies, coordinate business financing and provide on-going legal support and guidance to help our corporate clients respond to the inevitable challenges of doing business.

To facilitate smooth transactions through the stages of our clients’ personal and corporate lives, we offer various Estate Services, including estate planning, Will preparation and estate administration. Assistance with insolvency and bankruptcy is also available.

   History

Many members of the firm and its predecessors firms have gone on to greater things. Mr. Justice Reid Bowlby was appointed to the Ontario Court of Appeal. William Parker was appointed to the Supreme Court of Ontario and became Chief Justice of Ontario. Frances Weatherston was appointed to the Trial Division of the Supreme Court of Ontario and then elevated to the Ontario Court of Appeal. John Bowlby, son of Mr. Justice Reid Bowlby, was also appointed to the Supreme Court of Ontario.

In more recent years, Thomas Lofchik was appointed to the Ontario Court, General Division and is a sitting trial judge. George Stephen Gage was appointed to the Ontario Court of Justice and currently sits as a criminal justice in Toronto.

The firm has played a part in legal governance. John Bowlby was Treasurer of the Law Society of Upper Canada and John Douglas Thoman was a bencher of the Law Society of Upper Canada. John Soule has been a Director of the Advocates Society.

J. Douglas Thoman was president of the Hamilton Law Association, the Hamilton Medical Legal Society and was ultimately chairman of the County of District’s Law Presidents Association. Members of the firm have been presidents of the Hamilton Lawyers’ Club.

The firm has always had a strong commitment to legal education with various members teaching advocacy skills, specifically oriented legal lectures in connection with recent developments in evidence, civil litigation and insurance law.
